Education Architecture - Middle School Design
School designs of today require an understanding of the changes taking place both in the classroom and in educational theory. The design of middle school facilities by Southern A&E designers utilizes a knowledge of advances made in educational fields for this group of children.
In our middle school designs the use of natural lighting and low maintenance, durable materials are fundamental. Architects who design schools must have a strong appreciation for fostering a better learning environment through the appropriate use and placement of equipment and furnishings, noise absorption, and easy incorporation of computer and communication technologies. In practice, we incorporate such features as sloping quarry tile floors for positive drainage; open spacious kitchens and serving areas; and concrete block partitions with hollow metal doors for durability.
Security is also a factor in our middle school design; working in conjunction with our clients, we incorporate the use of electronic security devices and a radial space layout which allows for minimal staff requirements for monitoring purposes.
Some additional features you will find in a typical Southern A&E middle school design are:
- expanded athletic spaces
- incorporation of exploratory areas such as art, music and technology classrooms
- layout of spaces to better insulate the younger student population from older students
- building designs that work in conjunction with the middle school teaching model
